West Blackdown Model Gliding Club has permission to fly at various sites.
Slope soaring is mainly done at Culmstock Beacon suitable for winds from
the west and south. Hartridge, near Luppitt is an alternative, with easier access, whenever
the wind is westerly. Other sites,on private land and available to members only,
provide slope soaring when winds are easterly and from the north. Similarly we
have a flat field thermal and electric flying site for members.
Culmstock Beacon is the heart and home of the Club and
flies SSE-W. It is situated near Wellington, Somerset and has delightful views.
To reach the site, leave J26 M5 Motorway and take the A38 towards Tiverton.
After 1 mile, turn left signposted Culmstock. Bear left at Nicholashayne and after
half a mile, turn left signposted Beacon. At the end of the lane, park but please
do not obstruct as we enjoy the goodwill of local residents. The west and south facing slopes
are reached by walking through the gate, continue on up the track and bear right
at the top. You will eventually come to a stone beacon hut. We fly on the Beacon
on most Sunday afternoons from about 2pm throughout the year subject to wind
direction. We also fly on Wednesday evenings during the summer and Wednesday during the day in the winter.

Hartridge is situated near Luppitt in Devon and
flies SW-WNW. It is possible to reach this site from the A303 between Ilminster
and Honiton. Turn right off the A303 at Monkton (towards Luppitt. Most members,
however, travel from the north side of Hartridge via Smeatharpe. Adjacent to Stock car racing
Circuit on right of road, Turn left down unmarked road which will lead you
to Hartridge. Parking is by
footpath sign.

Easterlies:
We have use of a beautiful little bowl which flies E to SE. This is on private land and is
available to members and their bona fide guests only.
Northerlies: We also have a licence to use a National Trust owned slope which flies NNW to N. This site
sometimes produces some “interesting” conditions but has a huge grassy area for
landings. Again this is available to members and their bona fide guests
only.
New North West Site near Tiverton: This site is on private farm land and is available to club members only. It flies well when the wind is smack on NW but is not too bad when the wind is off to either side. Landing can be a little tricky as you don't really get out of lift until you are in fields behind the site. Great for smaller planes and foamies, more difficult for larger thermal and scale gliders. Talk to Tim or Steve A or Ted if you need directions

Flat Field Flying : We have the use of several large fields on a farm at Nynehead near Wellington. On one field there is a 1000m grass air strip running West/East and there will soon be a similar one running North/South. The area south of the present strip which has been cropped will be put to grass. This field will be used by a motor glider and a microlite aircraft but club members will be able to fly there at any time as long as we give due consideration to the full size aircraft. This and other fields will be available to fit in with stocking and cropping rotations. Use of the site is secured for the monthly flat field sessions but clarification is needed for casual flying. It is best to check with Ted who can liase with the farmer if you want to fly there.
Bossington Hill Near Minehead Flies W-N: This is
is a brilliant coastal site used by the Minehead club. North Hill is approached from a turning off the main street in Minehead. You need to keep climbing up the hill and drive for about three miles until you reach a carpark that overlooks the sea and can go no further. The path to the site leaves the carpark on your right if you are facing the sea. There are usually plenty of walkers on the path at the weekend. Click on the image above and study the map. We have made several trips here and I'm sure it will become a regular venue as it has the best lift in this part of the South West. It is particularly good for heavier models that need good smooth lift.
We constantly have our spies out looking for new flying sites so expect this list to expand! Watch this space!
